‘Constantine’ Sequel With Keanu Reeves Is Officially Happening

Warner Bros is still busy trying to expand their catalogue of DC adaptations. While most of these form the interconnected fictional universe called the DCEU – they’ve been known to produce stand-alone films as well. This includes the 2019 film Joker and its upcoming sequel. Now, interestingly enough, it looks like Warner Bros is preparing a sequel to another DC property – albeit one that’s been dormant since 2005. Specifically, it’s been confirmed that the 2005 film Constantine starring Keanu Reeves will be getting a brand-new sequel.

This news comes via Deadline where they also shared the 2005 film’s director, Francis Lawrence, will also be returning to direct this sequel. This is certainly an exciting announcement for any fans that were hoping Keanu Reeves would return as John Constantine, the supernatural exorcist and demonologist that fans have come to love. While he is distinctly different from his comic book counterpart – and the version Matt Ryan played throughout the Arrowverse – he’s certainly earned his fans.

And, with the growing popularity of Keanu Reeves thanks to the success of the John Wick franchise, it makes sense that they’d want to produce a sequel. Of course, details for the project are still unknown at this point. But the confirmation that it is happening – especially 17 years after the previous film was released – is great news. Hopefully we’ll have additional details soon.

The screenplay for the new sequel to Constantine will be written by Akiva Goldsman. He will also produce the film via his own Weed Road Pictures, along with Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella.

Warner Bros Pictures Group Co-Chairs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy shepherded the deal. Meanwhile, Lorenzo DiBonaventura and Erwin Stoff are attached as executive producers on the project. A release date has yet to be given, but fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates as we have them.
