‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’ Star Louise Fletcher Dead At 88

Louise Fletcher wowed audiences with her performance as Nurse Ratched in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Sadly, it’s been announced that she died at age 88 in her home in France.

This news comes via Deadline. And, although a cause of death was not available, her agent David Shaul confirmed that “she passed away in her sleep at the home she had built from a 300-year-old farmhouse, surrounded by family.” In fact, they revealed that Louise Fletcher stated the following on the day of her death: “I can’t believe I created something so meaningful to my well-being,” in regards to her home.

Of course, Louise Fletcher’s career was also quite incredible. For example, her performance in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest won her the best actress Oscar. As a result, she became only the third woman to win an Academy Award, the BAFTA Award, and the Golden Globe Award for just one single performance. And, while she did end up being typecast several times as a result, she still managed to provide plenty of other beloved roles.

For example, Fletcher managed to appear as the fan-favorite religious leader Kai Winn Adami on the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This was followed by a role on Picket Fences. She would appear in several other television shows throughout the 2000s, all the way until her final TV credit in Netflix’s 2017 comedy Girlboss. Her career also took varied turns in the film business, with her performance in horror film sequel Exorcist II: The Heretic being a notable flop. Nevertheless, she maintained her career and always gave the best performance she could no matter the project.

Louise Fletcher is survived by her sons John Dashiell Bick and Andrew Wilson Bick as well as granddaughter Emilee Kaya Bick, sister Roberta Ray, brother-in-law Edward Ray, and 10 nieces and nephews.
