The hit Netflix series The Crown is about to debut its fifth season. Interestingly, however, Netflix has done something that it hasn’t done with past seasons of the show. Now the major streaming platform known as Netflix has added a new warning to the hit series.
As you can see below, they apparently want to make it clear that their production of The Crown is a work of fiction.
This seems to be a result of backlash that the series has been facing over the last few years. As noted by Deadline, this comes “after two years of lobbying from certain circles including former Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden, who said in late 2020 that a ‘health warning’ should be played before episodes so viewers know the series is a work of fiction.” Of course, it’s worth noting that this warning isn’t available in the trailer itself – merely the description of the video.
Here’s the new warning that Netflix added to their series The Crown:
“Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatisation tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign.”
A Netflix spokeswoman further added that “The Crown has always been presented as a drama based on historical events.” This will be demonstrated in the upcoming fifth season which takes place in the early 1990s. Of course, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, it will certainly be an interesting road ahead. The series already paused production for a short time while the country mourned Queen Elizabeth II’s death. As such, we’ll have to see how the new seasons continue to tell the fictionalized version of Queen Elizabeth II’s story.
The fifth season of The Crown will be available to stream via Netflix on November 9, 2022. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them. In the meantime, it seems evident that fans should remember the series is a “fictional dramatization.”
