Richard Belzer was both an actor and former stand-up performer who many fans remember as having played John Munch on Law & Order: SVU. Sadly, it’s been revealed that Belzer has died at age 78.
As shared via THR, Belzer’s death occurred early Sunday while he stayed at his home in Bozouls in southwest France. They also shared a statement from writer Bill Scheft who was a longtime friend of Belzer’s:
“He had lots of health issues, and his last words were, ‘F*ck you, motherf*cker.”
Of course, for those who were fans of Belzer, they’re well-aware of his edgy sense of humor. This sense of humor was illustrated in many of his performances on both film and television. This, of course, includes his aforementioned role as John Munch. The character appeared in such properties as The X-Files, The Beat, The Wire, and even Sesame Street.
A few of his other roles included such projects as Groove Tube, Fame, Scarface, Night Shift, Fletch Lives, The Big Picture, and The Man in the Moon. In 1998, he played the United States President in the film Species II. Even superhero fans may recognize the actor for his appearance in the 1990s television series The Flash as well as his role as Inspector Henderson on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
He’s certainly led quite the career over the decades. As such, many film and television fans are sure to be saddened by this news. But the actor left a great impact on the world of television, and quite the legacy, and one doesn’t have to look far to see it. Even if only for his iconic role as John Munch – Richard Belzer was a fantastic actor.
Richard Belzer is survived by his third wife, Harlee McBride who he married in 1985, and his stepdaughters Jessica and Bree.
