We’ve seen plenty of cancellations in the streaming and television worlds recently. Now two of television’s longest running shows have been cancelled.
The two shows, as revealed via Deadline, both belong to the courtroom television genre. Surprisingly, this latest announcement comes after the announcement that Dr. Phil was also cancelled. The future is certainly unclear for the daytime syndication world.
Here’s what they were able to share regarding the aforementioned two of the longest running shows:
“Judge Mathis and The People’s Court revival are ending their long TV runs, both victims of challenging market conditions within the daytime syndication landscape.”
At the time of this news, Judge Mathis has been on air for 24 seasons. Meanwhile, The People’s Court consists of 39 total seasons as of the 2022-23 television season.
They further noted, “Judge Greg Mathis is the longest-running Black male host on television and the second-longest-reigning arbitrator in courtroom television history, behind Judith Sheindlin.” As for Judge Marilyn Milian, the current host of The People’s Court, she “is the show’s longest-running arbiter, presiding for 22 years beginning in 2001.”
Both shows have received awards as well. Judge Mathis won a 2018 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lega/Courtroom Program. This also made the series the first court show with an African American jurist to win. As for The PEople’s Court, that particular series won four Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom program in 2014, 2015, 2020, and 2021. This happens to be the most wins for a court show in this particular category. Additionally, the series has also received twelve nominations in the past.
