Netflix Subscriptions Have Huge Spike After Password-Sharing Crackdown

Netflix saw plenty of backlash after announcing their plans to start a crackdown against password-sharing. Nevertheless, it’s now been revealed that Netflix subscriptions are spiking as a result of their decision.

These numbers were revealed by the research company Antenna. According to their findings, Netflix had its “four single largest days” of new subscriptions in the United States in late May than the more than four years when they began measuring the streaming application.

In fact, the Netflix streaming service is said to have gathered 100,000 new accounts on May 26 and May 27. This happened after the password-sharing crackdown began. The successful results continued as Netflix now has more than 100% growth in new subscriptions from the prior 60-day average that was measured.

As shared by Antenna, these numbers are actually the highest the streaming service has seen since before the COVID-19 pandemic:

“These exceed the spikes in sign-ups Antenna observed during the initial US Covid-19 lockdowns in March and April 2020,” they explained. Though they also noted that “cancels also increased during this period, but not as much as sign-ups.” So while some users were disappointed enough by the crackdown to cancel their subscriptions, there were more users eager to sign up.

Of course, we’ll still have to see what effect these changes have on Netflix in the long-term. Especially with so many other competing applications in the market now. But for now it looks like their strategy to cut down on password-sharing is working out for the popular streaming service. This does line up with the reactions that Netflix was expecting to see when they started their decision.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on Netflix and other such streaming services as we have them. It looks like we’ll be in for some very interesting changes going forward, especially if this password-sharing crackdown continues to be a success.
