New ‘Resident Evil’ Movie Appears To Be In Development

The Resident Evil movie franchise has been an ongoing series for decades now. The latest film installment, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, hit theaters as recently as 2021. Now it looks like the next Resident Evil installment is already in development.

It’s been unknown whether or not Welcome to Raccoon City would be given a sequel. The preceding film series, which began with the 2002 film starring Milla Jovovich, spawned numerous sequels. It seemed like Sony would hope to recreate that success and now, as shared via Bloody-Disgusting, that does appear to be the case.

Here’s how they explained the situation regarding the project as they learned from the official website for the city of Sudbury:

“The city, which was one of the filming locations for Welcome to Raccoon City, will be receiving $2 million CAD from the provincial government for the project, which is being developed by Raccoon HG Film Productions. That same production company was behind the 2021 movie.”

Though it’s unknown if the film could be a sequel, it does appear to be titled “The Umbrella Chronicles” at this point in time. This was also the name of a 2007 video game, and furthermore it’s similarly unknown if there’s any relation. But Welcome to Raccoon City certainly left the door open for an additional follow-up. The film specifically featured quite an interesting post-credits scene with Albert Wesker. Other specific details regarding this film project, including cast or crew, are yet to be revealed.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Resident Evil updates as we have them. The films so far have received mixed results by fans of the franchise. Nevertheless, the films have mostly performed quite well at the box office, so it makes sense that Sony would want to keep the brand alive. Hopefully more details will be released soon.
