In the face of inflation, many streaming services are beginning to increase their prices and introduce ads to stay afloat. Now it looks like YouTube Premium will be increasing its own prices just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
As revealed via Deadline, “YouTube Premium will now charge $22.99 per month for its family plan, which allows up to six users on an account. That’s up from $17.99 per month.” This is certainly a surprising announcement and one that includes other price increases for the service. For example, they’ve revealed that “the price is rising to $29.99/month if you subscribe through the Apple App Store.”
Additionally, they were able to reveal that “YouTube claims it has passed 50 million subscribers for its Premium and Music subscriptions.” With numbers like these, a price increase is definitely going to impact a lot of people. However, it’s been noted as well that “the cost for individual YouTube Premium accounts appears to be staying at $11.99.” So, with this in mind, it looks like the price will only be implemented for those with the family plan. Of course, given how much families need to be budgeting (especially around Thanksgiving), this might be a controversial decision.
Here’s what an email sent to subscribers had to say on the matter:
“We created YouTube Premium to provide an uninterrupted YouTube experience, so you can get closer to the videos, creators, and music artists that you love. To continue delivering great service and features, we will be increasing your Premium family plan price from $17.99/month to $22.99/month.
This change will take place on your next billing cycle starting on or after November 21, 2022.”
A spokesman for the service added that they “do not have anything to share today about other plans.” As such, they further revealed that they’d “always notify users by email at least 30 days in advance before changing their plan’s price.” So, if they have any intention to increase the costs of other YouTube Premium plans, then they might not be planning to do so in the near future.
