We haven’t had a new film installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise since 2017. A large part of this has been due to the legal troubles of franchise star Johnny Depp. Of course, that hasn’t stopped Disney from actively developing other Pirates of the Caribbean projects, including a spin-off with Margot Robbie.
This particular spin-off was first announced in 2020. And while fans have been eager to see where it would find its place in the series, Margot Robbie has now revealed that the project is dead. She said as much while speaking with Vanity Fair and noted that Disney wants nothing to do with the film.
Here’s what Margot Robbie had to say about the Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off:
“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” Robbie revealed.
Although details about the project are scarce, it was revealed that Christina Hodson was working on the screenplay. She previously penned the film Birds of Prey which also starred Margot Robbie. Additionally, she wrote the screenplay for Batgirl which was ultimately canceled by Warner Bros. As such, it’s sad to see that this Pirates of the Caribbean project is likewise being dropped by Disney. Of course, that doesn’t mean the franchise is dead in the water just yet.
A sixth film is the main series of films is still currently being developed. However, it seems unlikely that Johnny Depp will be involved with this sequel. As such, it’ll be interesting to see where the storyline heads from this point forward. After all, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales certainly left the door open for a direct sequel. Hopefully we’ll have more details soon.
