The Rise of Skywalker is the last Star Wars film to have been released in theaters. In the few years since, Lucasfilm has produced a variety of different live-action and animated Star Wars shows for Disney Plus. This includes the incredibly successful series The Mandalorian which many fans believe “saved” the franchise following the lackluster performance of The Rise of Skywalker. Now, however, it appears that Lucasfilm has plans to announce new Star Wars film projects in the near future.
This was revealed via THR. They’ve noted that Disney has plans to reduce the production of Disney Plus shows and the pace at which they’re released. This means putting Star Wars multimedia franchise back on the big screen. As such, they claim that “Disney is expected to unveil film plans at Star Wars Celebration, set for April in London.”
Of course, this might not be too surprising. Fans have been well-aware that filmmakers like Damon Lindelof and Taika Waititi have been developing their own takes on the Star Wars franchise. Additionally, Patty Jenkins was attached to direct a Rogue Squadron film that THR notes “may never materialize.”
With that said, there are still several new Star Wars shows on the way. This includes Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, and the third season of The Mandalorian. But their insider noted the following:
“Lucasfilm may ramp up, but it will have to abide by the same fiscal discipline as the rest of the company.”
As such, it’ll be interesting to see what Star Wars film plans Lucasfilm might have in April. It’s possible that the company will announce only a handful of projects – or an entire slate. We’ll just have to see what happens.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Star Wars film and television franchise as we have them. It’s certainly going to be an interesting time as a fan.
