It was recently reported that Dexter: New Blood would be cancelled by Showtime in favor of a Dexter prequel series. Now it looks like Dexter: New Blood will be renewed after all – with the prequel series also being given the greenlight. And, appropriately enough, it will be titled Dexter: Origins.
This news comes via Wall Street Journal. Obviously it isn’t much of a surprise that Showtime would want to continue the Dexter franchise in some form. After all, Dexter: New Blood broke major records for Showtime after becoming the most-watched series in the network’s history. It averaged over 8 million viewers weekly across platforms.
Here’s what WSJ reported regarding the renewal of Dexter: New Blood and the order for Dexter: Origins:
“The network has ordered an origin-story prequel to Dexter, a serial-killer drama that dates back to 2006. Showtime is also exploring separate spinoffs based on the back stories of compelling Dexter characters, including the Trinity Killer.”
“The origin story will be set in Dexter’s hometown of Miami, and will touch on stories of real-life serial killers of the time period,” the site’s report continues.
It seems as though fans will see characters such as Harry and Deb in Dexter: Origins. Meanwhile, Dexter: New Blood will follow Dexter’s son Harrison as he moves to New York City in an effort to wrestle with his own personal demons. With Showtime soon merging with Paramount Plus, we’ll definitely be in for a major transitional period as they produce and distribute content to compete in a larger streaming market. The Dexter television franchise will no doubt be a major part of their plan.
The original Dexter television series ran from 2006 to 2013. The first season in particular was based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by author Jeff Lindsay. The following seasons continued separately from Lindsay’s other Dexter books. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Dexter, Showtime, and Paramount Plus as we have them.
