Gina Carano played Cara Dune in the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian. Her character made several appearances throughout the first two seasons of the show. In 2021, however, Gina Carano was fired from the series and essentially blacklisted in Hollywood. Now with The Mandalorian Season 3, it’s now been revealed that Gina Carano has been written out of Star Wars canon.
Her character’s departure from the show was explained in the Season 3 premiere of The Mandalorian. The character is mentioned once Greef Karga tries to convince Din Djarin to become Nevarro’s new Marshal. After all, she had become the city’s Marshal by the end of the show’s second season.
Naturally, Din Djarin inquires about the situation, and Greef Karga gives a brief but solid answer. He explains that Cara Dune left Nevarro to join the New Republic Special Forces. This actually adds up with the now-cancelled series Rangers of the New Republic. The series would have been a spin-off featuring Gina Carano’s Cara Dune as she joined up with the New Republic. But given Carano being fired from Star Wars overall, the series was disbanded.
Of course, she wasn’t the main character of The Mandalorian. As such, her absence isn’t that difficult to accept. It’s clear that the studio has different plans for her character – but they did a fine enough job explaining what happened. It’s unclear if a recast version of the character could ever appear in another project – but for now The Mandalorian is moving along without her.
The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau wrote all eight episodes of the show’s third season. He was assisted with Noah Kloor on the third episode while Dave Filoni was involved with the fourth and seventh episodes. Directors for the season include Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, and co-star Carl Weathers.
The cast of the new season includes Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers, Katee Sackhoff, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Amy Sedaris, Christopher Lloyd, and Tim Meadows.
