‘Snow White’ Set Photos Spark Backlash For Being “Woke”

Disney recently began production on their latest live-action remake: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Now that set photos for the Snow White adaptation have leaked, however, the production is facing backlash for being “woke.”

Hollywood has been doing their best to increase diversity in new film and television projects. The diversity in Snow White, however, seems to be receiving backlash on social media due to the titular character being played by a Hispanic woman. Additionally, the dwarves are also depicted with different races, genders, and heights.

Here are the various images which surfaced from the film’s production via Daily Mail:

A Disney spokesperson is also said to have claimed the images were fake. They later clarified the statement, however, expressing that while the images were indeed from the production, they were not official photos released by Disney. Their initial statement is now believed to have been a mere misunderstanding.

It’s also worth noting that the Snow White character featured in the picture is actually a stand-in for Hispanic actress Rachel Zegler. As for the other characters, they replace the original “Seven Dwarfs” as the film’s “Magical Creatures.” The phrase “dwarf” was considered to be a reinforcement of a negative stereotype following comments made by actor Peter Dinklage. Thus Disney plans to make some very interesting changes for this film as the newly-shared images reveal.

Fans have already responded with some of the following comments where they complain that the new Snow White film is too “woke” compared to the original:

Though some find no issue with the changes:

The upcoming film is being directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay penned by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson. The original story stems from an 1812 fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm. The cast of the film includes Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, Ansu Kabia, Andrew Burnap, Martin Klebba, and Colin Michael Carmichael.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Snow White and Disney updates as we have them. For now, these newly-surfaced set photos certainly illustrate what we can expect from the upcoming production. This will definitely be a major change from the classic animated film from 1937.
