Disney Plus Cancels Two Unreleased Shows To Cut Costs

Disney recently revealed that they planned on cutting costs – and they weren’t lying about that, as the company has decided to cancel two upcoming shows before they have even been released.

Filming recently wrapped on all ten episodes of Nautilus, a 10-part series inspired by 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Now, however, Disney appears to have cancelled the Disney Plus series altogether before it was even aired – in an effort to save costs, similar to what Warner Bros did with Batgirl.

As noted via SFF Gazette, “the reversal on Nautilus is but one of many cost-cutting moves made by Disney across its streaming platform as several other series have also been canceled.” If that wasn’t enough, they add that “some have even disappeared” from Disney Plus as well and that there is “no alternative way to view them.”

Fortunately, it does look like there’s some hope for Nautilus. Disney, the home of other properties like Marvel, is said to be “shopping the fantastical adventures of Captain Nemo to other networks and streaming platforms.” Disney Plus themselves is currently “setting up meetings and screenings.”

For those unfamiliar, here’s the premise for the series focusing on Nemo who is “an Indian Prince robbed of his birth right and family, a prisoner of the East India Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces which have taken everything from him. But once he sets sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring Nautilus, he not only battles with his enemy, he also discovers a magical underwater world.”

Additionally, Deadline reports that Disney Plus cancelled another highly-anticipated series – The Spiderwick Chronicles. Similarly, it’s being shopped by Paramount to other potential buyers as it comes from both Paramount Television Studios and Disney’s 20th Television.

Shazad Latif stars in the series as Nemo with Georgia Flood as Humility Lucas and Thierry Frémont as Gustave Benoit. Pacharo Mzembe, Arlo Green, Tyrone Ngatai, Ling Cooper Tang, Andrew Shaw, Ashan Kumar, Céline Menville and Kayden Price also star.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on Nautilus and The Spiderwick Chronicles in addition to other Disney Plus details as we have them. For those eager to see the adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, or The Spiderwick Chronicles, let’s hope that they can each find a new home elsewhere. Otherwise, it’s certainly disappointing to see other promising projects cancelled by a streaming service with nowhere else to be viewed.
