Legal Issues Won’t Allow Sony To Use Marvel Spider-Man Character

The Spider-Man brand is comprised of numerous characters. Many of these different characters are mere variants of the titular superhero himself. This has been the premise for a series of successful animated films including Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Sadly, it looks like Sony doesn’t have the rights to a certain Marvel Spider-Man character.

Though Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, has appeared in several MCU movies, Sony still retains the film rights to the character. They had to make a deal with Disney and Marvel Studios in order for the character to be used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As such, the rights are all over the place, and now we’ve learned of one other interesting legal detail.

As shared by Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse lead character designer Kris Anka on Twitter, Sony no longer has the rights to Spider-Boy. The aforementioned character was first introduced in the one-shot “Spider-Boy #1” (1996) which was created by Karl Kesel and Mike Wieringo. So, for a film like Across the Spider-Verse, which uses many different film, television, and comic book versions of Spider-Man characters, it would make sense to use Spider-Boy.

One fan actually spotted a rendition of the character at an expo. Unfortunately they weren’t featured in the actual film. Now, as explained by Anka, this is what happened:

“it is real, ive never posted the actual drawing.

obviously we ended up not being able to do use it cause legal law reasons”

It’s unfortunate that the character seems to be tied up in legal issues. But Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse certainly made up for it in other ways. The film is full of other surprising characters from across decades of Spider-Man lore. There’s no telling who else might appear in the additional follow-up, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is currently in production.
