It’s not unusual for networks or streaming services, especially the likes of HBO and Max, to cancel new shows these days. However, one particular series was controversial from the very beginning, and now it looks like the decision has been made not to renew it. This means we won’t be getting a second season of the HBO series The Idol.
For those unfamiliar, The Idol comes via Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. As noted by Variety, however, HBO decided not to go ahead with a second season despite the show’s “strong audience response.”
Here’s the full statement:
“’The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” said a spokesperson for HBO. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
As mentioned, however, the series featuring “The Weeknd” was always quite controversial. In fact, it was originally intended to run for six episodes during its first season, but the decision was made to cut it to five episodes. Now, while a second season was initially left possible, it looks like the story has concluded.
The Idol starred both Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp.
In addition to director Sam Levinson and star Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Reza Fahim served as co-creator of The Idol. They also all three executive produced with Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson, Joe Epstein, Sara E. White and Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert. A24 also produced for the series.
