New ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Movie Is In Development

Fans have been waiting to hear the latest on Disney‘s Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. Unfortunately, the studio seems eager to reboot the brand, especially with Johnny Depp’s various controversies. Interestingly, however, it looks like The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin is developing a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Craig Mazin revealed as much via The LA Times. Apparently he pitched the project to Disney, and while he expected it to be “too weird,” it looks like Disney was happy with their pitch. In fact, the film already has a script that’s ready to go once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes come to an end.

Here’s what Mazin shared:

“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did!” Mazin said. “And then he [Ted Elliot] wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”

The film doesn’t have a release date as of yet. As such, fans will probably have to continue waiting a few years before the project gets underway. For now, however, it’s exciting to see Craig Mazin’s name attached, especially with the success of The Last of Us. There’s plenty of potential in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe; and between this and whatever other projects are in the works, we’ll have to see how Disney chooses to proceed.

The Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise launched in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl. The film was incredibly successful and spawned a series of four sequels, all of which starred Johnny Depp. This includes Dead Man’s Chest in 2006, At World’s End in 2007, On Stranger Tides in 2011, and most recently Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Pirates news as we have it. For now, fans can catch up with the franchise via Disney Plus, and Mazin’s series The Last of Us is available via Max.
