The Sinister movie franchise never quite took off. Nevertheless, the success of the Blumhouse film was enough to turn its villain, Bughuul, into a horror icon. Now the writer of Sinister is calling out Home Depot for their newly-revealed knock-off Bughuul decoration.
Naturally, the new piece isn’t called Bughuul, but rather “The Boogeyman.” It’s an ambiguous enough name that just about anything can use. Additionally, it’s in the public domain, which allows Home Depot to get away with titling its new piece of Halloween merchandise such a name.
It’s the likeness, however, that will immediately cause fans to liken it to Bughuul. In fact, Sinister writer C. Robert Cargill even saw the resemblance between the two. As you can see below, the Sinister scribe made a clever post on X to point out the similarities between Bughuul and its Home Depot counterpart:

“This just looks so familiar,” Cargill writes about Home Depot’s “latest decoration.” Cargill further teases that he “juuuust can’t put my finger on why…”
It’s unknown if Home Depot made any deals to use the likeness of Bughuul or if they just went for it with their “Boogeyman” decoration. Interestingly, the original design for Bughuul was licensed from an artist on the internet. Director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill searched Flickr to find the right look for Bughuul. Eventually they came across the artwork which was used to create the character for the film. The artist was paid and even given a concept design credit.
Ultimately, it proves that Bughuul is still a fan-favorite villain, and one that will hopefully make a return to cinemas sooner or later. In the meantime, it looks like Home Depot might be the next best place to look for the creepy deity. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any further news.
