The HBO Max streaming service has opened up plenty of possibilities for new works based on existing IPs. Of course, while Warner Bros Discovery has canceled a considerable amount of these upcoming projects, there are still plenty of new titles being discussed. Now it’s been revealed that HBO Max has been considering the production of a Harry Potter series as well.
This was revealed by Sarah Aubrey, the Head of Original Content at HBO Max, in a recent interview with Variety. She took the time to discuss how many of these iconic properties are owned by WarnerMedia, including the Harry Potter franchise, and that HBO Max has considered creating a series based on the legendary film franchise.
Here’s what she specifically had to say on the matter:
“We’re very much in the business of creating new content for those fans and thinking what to do next.”
Of course, the most recent iteration of the Harry Potter film franchise has been the Fantastic Beasts films. There are currently three of these films and they include Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. The most recent films in the franchise has received mixed reviews, however, with the third film having replaced Johnny Depp’s role as Grindelwald with Mads Mikkelsen.
Additionally, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has become a controversial figure for comments she made online which have been regarded as transphobic by the LGBT community. And, likewise, star Ezra Miller who featured prominently throughout the Fantastic Beasts films has also become a controversial figure. As such, it’s unknown if these films will continue or if Warner Bros will find another avenue to continue the franchise (such as the hypothetical HBO Max series.)
With that in mind, there are plenty of places and time periods a Harry Potter streaming series could dive into. And, no doubt, there are fans who would be excited to have more adventures set within the Wizarding World. So stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
