Streaming is often an unpredictable landscape. As it turns out, even season renewals aren’t a surefire guarantee, as Amazon just cancelled a fan-favorite Prime series despite a Season 2 renewal.
The cancellation was revealed via Variety, where they noted that The Peripheral has been cancelled. Interestingly, the Amazon series was renewed for a second season in February – just a few months after the series debuted on October 21, 2022.
There wasn’t much information given regarding the cancellation. It appears to have had something to do with the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Here’s what was shared:
“According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the decision to not move forward with the second season was heavily influenced by the ongoing writers and actors strikes. In essence, even if the show was to go back into production soon, Season 2 would not be available until close to if not into 2025.”
The ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have already resulted in several projects being delayed and other such hiatuses. It looks like we’ll only continue seeing such issues arise as long as negotiations continue. For those unfamiliar with the series, The Peripheral is based on the William Gibson novel of the same name.
As shared via the show’s official logline, it “centers on Flynne Fisher (Chloe Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Flynne is smart, ambitious, and doomed. She has no future; until the future comes calling for her.”
The cast for the show’s first season included Chloe Moretz, Jack Reynor, Gary Carr, Eli Goree, Louis Herthum, JJ Feild, T’Nia Miller, Charlotte Riley, Alexandra Billings, Adelind Horan, Alex Hernandez, Katie Leung, Julian Moore-Cook, Melinda Page Hamilton, Chris Coy, and Austin Rising.
