Moviegoers have been looking forward to The Exorcist: Believer. The upcoming horror movie is a brand-new sequel to the original 1973 classic, The Exorcist. For those afraid that the new film would be softer than its predecessor, however, you won’t need to worry. The MPAA has just announced the official rating for The Exorcist: Believer.
Fans should be relieved to know that The Exorcist: Believer will be Rated R by the MPAA. This might not be too shocking, but in a world where possession films are often PG-13, it’s nice to know that Believer will contain some of the franchise’s signature bite. Especially if this is set to be a faithful continuation of the original.
Here’s the reason for the R rating given to The Exorcist: Believer:
“Rated R for some violent content, disturbing images, language and sexual references.”
It’s worth noting that all of the Exorcist films so far have been given R ratings by the MPAA. So, with that in mind, this film will at least follow that tradition. And given the description for the rating, it looks like it will feature the same styled tropes that fans have come to expect from this series. Though it’s likely we’ll be seeing plenty of new elements as well. Especially if this sequel is set to pave the way for an additional two films in the franchise.
David Gordon Green directed the film from a screenplay he penned alongside Peter Sattler. The story was created by Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Green. In addition to Ellen Burstyn, the cast includes Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Jennifer Nettles, Olivia Marcum, Raphael Sbarge, and Okwui Okpokwasili.
